The Climate and Environment Charter for Humanitarian Organizations

BY EDM | 26 AUG 2021
A framework for climate action across the humanitarian community.
The climate crisis is a humanitarian crisis, disproportionately harming the poorest and most marginalized communities. As the humanitarian impacts of climate change continue to intensify, it is more important than ever to account for climate and environmental factors during humanitarian and relief operations.

To outline a roadmap for this transformative change, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies led the development of a Climate and Environment Charter for Humanitarian Organizations. The Charter aims to rally collective action across the humanitarian sector to respond to these crises and urge others to do the same.

Anita van Breda, senior director of Environment and Disaster Management at WWF, served on the Advisory Committee that guided the development of this framework, collaborating with representatives of local, national, and international NGOs, UN agencies, national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the ICRC and IFRC.
