FLOOD MANAGEMENT SIMULATION EXERCISE
An integrated, watershed approach to flood management that combines policy, natural and nature-based methods, and hard engineering can reduce flood risk, promote co-benefits, and maximize the benefits of flooding. However, flood managers often approach flood management as a one-off project, where water is treated as a problem and not a resource, ultimately leading to increased risk. Looking beyond the confines of a project boundary to understand the watershed context, the variability of a changing climate, and to apply a less familiar flood management approach can be a challenge.
This simulation exercise asks small teams to tackle this challenge and engage multiple sectors and multiple flood management methods to help a city manage its flood problem. Participants will gain an overview of the natural, physical, and social systems that make up a watershed; the benefits of an integrated approach to flood management; an introduction to natural and nature-based flood management methods; and insight into the collaboration and coordination needed to manage flooding at a watershed scale.
