World Wildlife Fund (WWF), in partnership with the US Agency for International Development Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), has developed the Natural and Nature-Based Flood Management: A Green Guide (Flood Green Guide) to support communities in using natural and nature-based methods for flood risk management. An interdisciplinary global team developed the Flood Green Guide (FGG) with a specific focus on advancing the development and application of natural and nature-based methods for managing flood risk.
The Flood Green Guide is designed for those responsible for flood risk management, including municipal governments, community groups, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The Flood Green Guide offers guidance on managing and minimizing flood risk while maximizing social, environmental, and economic co-benefits of management approaches.
The guide recommends the use of multiple flood management methods, including hard and soft, structural and non-structural that complement one another and enhance existing management methods. The fundamentals of physical and social systems as well as climate, risk and urban issues are key topics discussed in the Flood Green Guide.
The Flood Green Guide is an open-source resource that is supported by a training program and online resource library. The training will support those responsible for flood management through information gathering, analysis, and decision making at multiple stages of a typical flood management project. After completing the training, managers will be able to characterize their watershed and social context, interpret risk assessments for flood management, and prioritize methods for flood management.
